Layers and Springs

The layer designation of the 58mm knives can be slightly confusing due to the way the knife is constructed.

Unlike the 91mm series, that has many spring types, the 58mm series only uses one spring type, usually with the key ring loop as an addition to one spring. The springs are 'floating' and paired 'back-to-back' inside the knife. See this original (diagram) for the design.
Tools of the knife usually use one spring (knife blades, nail file etc), with (only?) two of the tools using two springs (scissors, combo blades).
So the width of a knife is different if you count the tools, or the springs, as the layers!

SAKWiki uses the convention of side-by-side tool layers to determine the number of layers in a knife.

So for instance the Classic and Rambler are both designated as two-layer knives even though the Classic has two pairs of springs and the Rambler three, and therefore the Rambler being wider than the Classic . There is another curious situation with the Drifter and Vagabond. Both are exactly the same width with four pairs of springs internally, and the same number of tools, yet due to the tool layout, the Drifter is classified as a three layer tool - with three on each side, and the Vagabond as a four layer tool - four on one side, two on the other!
